The following topics are cascaded throughout your internship and are designed to help you maximise your placement experience. You will be also required to add comments in the discussion boards in Canvas.

WEEK 1

TOPIC: Things you need to know and understand in the workplace

Introduction to the topic:

Welcome to the world of work.  You are encouraged to complete the below modules early into your placement.  Being prepared at the start your Internship ( WIL activity) allows you to get the most from your experience and be better prepared for graduate employment

Learning Activities:

This topic's activity is to read all the information contained in the following links and complete the online test. Ideally these should be completed in the first one-two weeks at your placement. The sooner you complete this questionnaire, the sooner you will have some knowledge about working that you need to know.

All students need to please read the following information:

https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/student-essentials/work-integrated-learning/important-requirements-and-details

You also need to read through the following information:

Finally as part of the last module, you need to complete the built-in online quiz and send your certificate of completion to the course coordinator. Failure to do this may result in reducing your overall mark for this course.

WEEK 2

TOPIC: Workplace culture

Introduction to the topic:

In this topic we will consider the different aspects of workplace culture for you to think about and identify at your workplace/experience. Not all elements of workplace culture discussed in this module will be relevant to your situation, but it will start to give you some ideas to add to your Reflective piece, as well as encouraging you to think about "how we do things here". It is important to understand the formal and informal experiences at your workplace/experience, and to adapt to these ways of doing business in order for your time to be more pleasant.

Learning Activities:

Please read the following document: “What is workplace culture”

All students whether undertaking your placement in Australia or overseas, should consider their workplace culture. For international internships, you might experience "culture clash". Write them down as they occur. These will make a good part in your reflective piece which is worth 40% of your marks.

For the discussion board in Canvas:

Now that you have read the document on culture and considered what happened in the first few weeks of your placement, you are required to enter your thoughts on culture on the discussion board thread. An estimate of 100 words per topic would give you enough material to use to build your report and to demonstrate you understand what you are experiencing. You can prepare this in advance.

WEEK 3

TOPIC: Downsides of the workplace

Introduction to the topic:

In this topic we will talk about the things that can go wrong (but we hope that they won't go wrong for you! The things we discuss in this topic can be used in your Reflection piece due at the end of the quarter. That assessment piece is a reflection on the good, bad and ugly things that you went through in your placement, so here we will talk about some of the things that are not so nice.

By considering what elements of your workplace are a challenge, you can think about what things you need to adapt and also what things you need help with. As a result of these thoughts and discussions, you will be able to work out how to be more effective in your workplace.

Learning Activities:

In this topic you need to consider anything that has happened so far in your placement that was bad/boring/annoying or some other adjective that relates to something that was not good.

On the Discussion Board please list the things that have gone wrong or have not been pleasant. These will be kept strictly confidential from your workplace as they have no visibility of our Canvas site.  You can use this discussion board entry to add more things each week as they occur. This will build your reflective piece.

These tasks and activities will support you in your preparation for Assignment 2 which is the Reflective piece. In this reflective piece you might wish to reflect on the things that went wrong, or those you did not expect.

For the discussion board in Canvas:

Not everything goes right during your placement. Sometimes you have something go wrong or be bad or you were bored. This is the place to vent! Hopefully this will only take you 100 words, but feel free to add more.

Please come back frequently to add to this discussion as then you will have developed a draft for your Reflection.

Please refer to the Rubric to see what specific pieces you should reflect on.

Your comments here are not visible to your company and will be treated confidentially.

These discussions will help you to start your Reflective piece that is worth 20% of your marks
